Different Ways of Dealing with Stress - How can we reduce stress in our daily lives?

In the second part to Rodger's stress series, he addresses a number of already-established and new ways of how to deal with and reduce stress in our daily lives. To understand the ways in which stress can affect the body and cause illness, visit part one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au3_2SLxtQo&t=214s In part two, he includes varying ways in which we can reduce the amount of stress within our every day lives. These include taking the time to recognise we are overly stressed, slowing the pace of life down where possible. He addresses using body-scanning, meditation, stillness or quiet time, as well as exercise and social engagement as successful ways to calm our nervous system and de-stress. Rodger emphasises the importance of having balance with differing aspects of our life (work, family, friends) and ensure we do not excessively use these ways to reduce stress as coping strategies. Can Stress Make You Sick? How chronic stress can cause stress illness

Can Stress Make You Sick? Rodger Duckworth addresses how chronic stress can affect the body, often making you sick with a stress illness. He explains how short term stress is normal if healthily processed by the body. However, chronic (long-term) stress can mean the body is in a constant fight or flight response for prolonged period of time, in which an inflammatory and immune response is mobilised. This is due to the body constantly believing we are under a physical threat. Our activated immune system as a result of chronic stress can then cause autoimmune diseases, including IBS, lupus, Crohn's disease, arthritis or joint pain. Rodger gives his own example of healing from am autoimmune disease, which he understood was related to stress. ACE Scores Explained - What are Adverse Childhood Experiences? Can they cause later life illness?

ACE Scores - What are Adverse Childhood Experiences? Rodger explains their definition and how a higher score can increase your chance of having later-life biological diseases. ACE stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences, which can include difficult to process events such parental divorce, witnessing drug/alcohol abuse or emotional and physical abuse. He explains how illness in later life has a highly statically significant correlation to the events we experience as a child. The higher our ACE score, due to the more events we experience, the higher the risk of obtaining biological illness and disease in adulthood. Finally, Rodger relates ACE's to the field of epigenetics, explaining how childhood events can activate genetic DNA, manifesting as illness. How does trauma affect the body? How unresolved trauma can manifest as chronic pain and illness

How does trauma affect the body? Despite being very common, trauma is often viewed to only affect and be stored in the brain. In this video, Rodger Duckworth highlights the importance of acknowledging that when our stress / trauma becomes chronic, it is trapped within the body. This unresolved emotion can manifest and cause chronic pain and illness. When our brain perceives a threat, it turns on the sympathetic fight or flight response in order to protect us. Rodger explains how trauma can dysregulate our autonomic nervous system, making us stuck in a fight or flight or freeze response where we are unable to healthily process the trauma, creating illness. Watch this video Rodger references of a polar bear releasing trapped trauma from within the body. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHVNUDPMeSY If the trauma is too overwhelming, or we have not learnt how to manage our emotions from childhood, we carry adaptive coping strategies into adulthood. He explains how many autoimmune diseases can be caused by unresolved trauma, as well as functional illnesses such as anxiety, panic attacks and depression. He expresses how acknowledging his own trauma helped him to overcome a chronic inflammatory heart problem he struggled with for 8 years. 'When was the last time you felt an emotion in your head? Never' - They are not experienced here, but within the body. We need to learn how to recognise and process them. Trauma Therapy - What is it? Definition, Connection to the Nervous System and Treatment

Trauma Therapy - What is it? Rodger gives his definition of trauma therapy as anything that overwhelms our nervous systems ability to cope. He explains how we can work towards healing supressed trauma through re-training our autonomic nervous system within trauma therapy. Rodger explains how in a shock event that is too hard for our nervous system to process, we use adaptive strategies to cope, which later becomes trauma. He gives examples of the types of trauma therapy techniques he uses within treatment, including craniosacral therapy, somatic therapy, inner child work and reparenting work. In all aspects of treatment, Rodger uses a holistic, top-down and bottom-up approach to incorporate both somatic and psychological methods helping to release stored trauma. He would like to help individuals live their lives free of trauma and the chronic pain or illness associated with leaving it unresolved within the body! Toxic Positivity and Trauma - Why always remaining positive could slow your healing

In this video, Rodger questions the normality of constantly remaining positive in all situations, arguing this is not beneficial for people suffering from trauma. He understands as important it is not dwell in the negative, we should try and refrain also from a sense of false euphoria. We must feel all emotions, whether they be negative or positive. Those who have been abused will find it particularly hard to view their trauma in a positive light, and this is okay. He uses the example of a PTSD war solider, and how insensitive and to rationalise his trauma and the physical implications, as we cannot THINK our way out of trauma. He concludes their should be a balance - we should try to embrace and accept all level's of emotion, including the harder, negative emotions. An unhealthy level of positivity is really a form of denial, and processing every emotion will allow us to heal.
